SPRING BREAK HAS ARRIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be honest I am kind of bummed at its timing! The kids have been perfect these past few weeks and I fear that when we come back we will take awhile to settle back into "school routines"
I am excited to have a week off of school though! I will be spending some time in Wisconsin and hopefully in front of the tv cheering my Hoosiers onto the National Championship! Big game tonight!!
We had a great day today, two specials, centers, and a reward movie at the end of the day!
We did have a great time for math though. We did two big things. The first was our math egg hunt! I hid eggs all around the room that had addition and subtraction problems on them. The kids had to find the eggs and then write the problem and solve it on their worksheet! They loved this! It was fun to watch them search for the eggs! Unlike my Grandma(who is 88) I did not hide the eggs so the kids couldn't find them! Side story, I still beg for my Grandma to hide eggs for me each year and I hunt them by myself! She hides eggs so hard that I always give up and she has to help me find a few!! I love traditions though so I am looking forward to color eggs at her house tonight!

Next we made our March weather graph! We have been charting the weather each day and since this is our last day in school this March we made our graph! Graphing is a very important concept. The kids will quickly need to know how to read information in a graph and to make one. We did this together and all did a great job! We had made predictions at the beginning of the month and those that chose Cloudy were correct!
We finished the day cleaning up the room, packing up, and preparing our room for spring break! The kids then watched a movie with Mrs. Peaks class!
It was a GREAT DAY today!
I hope you all have a fun and safe spring break and I am excited to hear all about it from the kids when they return!
Please encourage your children to work on the Spring Break Packet that was sent home if they have any down time. Also please continue reading with them each day! A little bit of time each day would be great!
I am excited for the kids to return and then we are in the final stretch of Kindergarten!!!
Have a GREAT break!!

March 26, 2013

We had a good day today!
Our morning work activity was to write the number that started before a line of numbers. We also had a color by number activity. The kids did a great job with this activity. It is nice to see them recognizing the spelling of their numbers.
We had two center rotations following morning work.
After centers we watched the 2nd grade play in the cafeteria. They did a GREAT job during this time!
We had calender time following the play.
Next during fundations we have a new word family wall. We discussed several word families and the kids got to put words with the word families on the wall after the said the word out loud.
During our language arts time we discussed main idea and characters during reading.
After lunch we read aloud from our Magic Treehouse chapter book.
During our math time we had a hot pencils 3 minute test. addition practice, and we discussed reading information from charts and graphs. This was VERY challenging for the kids, but we worked through them together as a class. It was a great introduction and conversation about pulling information from a graph. The most important thing to understand is that all they have to do is search for the correct answer.
Next we had our sight word writing time. I did this almost like a spelling test. I asked them to spell a sight word then we raised hands to say the correct spelling. If they got it wrong I told them to cross it out and write the correct spelling. We did this for 10 sight words.
We had recess and snack time.
After recess and snake we continued with our sight word writing time. I told the kids that they would be writing them 3 times each as a homework assignment.
We packed up and had ART at the end of the day!
2 more days until Spring Break!
Please check your email for information about the homework assignment!

We had a great Monday!
This morning for morning work the kids were to write two sentences and then draw an illustration. They all did a great job with this assignment. I really am impressed with their writing skills! We are also focusing on matching the illustration with what is written. This helps comprehension skills when reading books with illustrations. We then had our morning calender wall time.
Fundations today was all about short and long E sounds. We worked together to think of words with the short and long e's. Next we worked independently and then checked together a packet with long and short E's. We had some good discussion during this time and all the kids did a great job with the activities.
After fundations we had two center rotations!
During language arts we finished our fundations packet and then discussed our new sight word for the week. The new word is WHO. We thought of sentences to use WHO in.
The kids had lunch and then read aloud. They also had Music and Movement today!
We received letters back from our second grade friends at Bittersweet! We read these letters and responded to them today!
Recess was outside today! Weather looks to be getting better as the week goes on!
Our math time today was very busy! We had a hot pencils 3 minute test and we did great! I had probably 15 pass today! Next we worked in our March math books. The kids did a great job during this as well. We have good discussions about different strategies that we can use to solve the problems! Our last part of math was spent discussing tally marks and why they are helpful. We also discussed writing numbers as words. Students will be tested on actually writing the word out correctly. We had a worksheet that followed up our discussion.
We also had a few sentences that students read and picked out sight words from. They had to read on their own and highlight the sight words on their own. They also had to draw an illustration to go along with the writing. We discussed and checked together!
It was a GREAT day here in Kindergarten!!! Only 45 days until 1st grade!
Please complete math worksheet tonight for homework! Also remember to read with your children!!
Looking forward to Tuesday!

Thursday March 21, 2013

We had another great day here in Kindergarten! Today was the first day I started using our new document camera in the class! It will be a great tool to have live picture of our work on the tv screen so all students can see what we are doing and follow along!
Our morning work dealt with putting things in ABC order and matching pictures to the correct name. The kids did a great job with these activities. We will be focusing on ABC order all throughout the fourth quarter of the school year!
We had IMC this morning. The kids were able to look for and check out their own books while at the Library!
We came back for Centers. We had two rotations today.
After centers we had our morning meeting and we also worked on a math story problem. We really dissected the story to look for short vowels and long vowels. We have also now started writing numbers as words instead of just the number. All students need to be able to identify the number words. We had great discussion during this time!
Following lunch we had read aloud! We finished out 16th Magic Tree House book! The kids enjoy these books! Our next one will take us on the Titanic for an adventure!
The kids had music and movement today!
Following that we had a writing assessment. We had to write two sentences. 1 using a period and 1 using a question mark. These will be for 3rd quarter assessment.
Next we discussed more with ABC order and strategies to organize words into ABC order.
After recess we had a simple subtraction assessment. All the kids did a good job on this!
Next we discussed how to identify what is similar in certain words and what is different. We had a good discussion during this time!
Math today was spent completing a shape assessment for the 3rd quarter. We had our 3 minute math test. We also worked on addition strategies. It is awesome to have the document camera during math! We had a very good discussion as we worked on addition problems together as a class!
Our day ended at that! We ran out of time for our Fundations lesson of the day! Will get to it tomorrow!
This has been another great day here in Kindergarten! I hope we can keep it up for Friday!!
The kids to have a sentence writing sheet for homework tonight! Please encourage them to try and spell their own words. They need to focus on capital letter at the beginning and punctuation at the end!!!
Looking forward to FRIDAY!!
Mr. Schultz

Thursdays Activities!

March 20, 2013

Another GREAT DAY!!!! The kids were EXCELLENT again today! We are on our way to a full week of excellence!! I am very happy with their behavior and participation in all activities!!
For our morning work this morning we did some counting activities. The kids did a great job with this. Once they finished they had some reading time!
Fundations time was spent discussing the CH and SH word blends. We had a great discussion and completed a worksheet that asked us to color words with the CH or SH ending and beginning. Mastering these blends will help move the kids along with their reading skills!
We had computer lab where we worked on Odyssey Math. The kids did a great job and earned 10 minutes of free time on tux paint!!
Language arts time was my favorite part of the day! The kids did a GREAT job on a reading packet! We will really be hitting comprehension strategies through the end of the school year. ALL the kids did a GREAT job on this. I read the story out loud then we read together. We discussed the vocabulary and then worked on the questions together. I stressed the importance of going back to the story to check for the correct answer. This type of work is stressed all throughout school. It is the basis for the Iread test. The kids must be able to read for comprehension and a lot of that goes back to being able to go back and find information in text.
We worked on this after lunch as well.
Math today we did an assessment for quarter 3. The kids were great throughout this time as well. We had our hot pencils test. More and More are passing everyday! Several are now on subtraction!! We did a larger number activity to refresh our skills.
Writing today we wrote to our fourth grade friends at Bittersweet elementary! The kids came up with great questions!! They all did a great job writing and I can see their skills improving every time we write! It is great!
We had recess and snack.
Science was spent discussing yesterdays inquiry and reading about plants in our big book! We had a very good discussion! The kids then completed a vocabulary worksheet labeling a flower!
We had some time for partner reading and discussed our daily activities at the end of the day!
Today was AWESOME! Please continue encouraging your children to come to school ready to learn everyday!!!
Looking forward to Thursday!!!

Tuesday March 19, 2013

The last day of Winter!!! Today was another GREAT day here in Kindergarten!! We had a fun day filled with lots of activities!
Our morning work activity consisted of a worksheet that dealt with rhyming words and long e words. The kids had to really think on this one as it was a little challenging on the rhyming words side of things. We had a good discussion about this concept once we were finished.
We had our morning meeting where we did calender, weather, and counting.
Fundations today was all about "AM" word families. We had good discussion during this time.
Next we had centers. Today we had two rotations during centers time.
Language arts time was spent further on AM word families. The kids had to write the words in a word family house as well as color and read the little book that we made!
We read the book together a few times after lunch! This book not only helps with the word families, but it also was full of sight words!
Math today was spent completing two of our 3rd quarter assessments. We refreshed our base ten skills as tomorrow assessment deals with the base ten block addition. The kids did a great job during math today!
We had a special snack as a reward for yesterdays behavior in class! They were good today so hope we can keep it up!
We started our letters to fourth grade friends, but did not get far. We will finish these tomorrow!
Recess was inside today.
Science lesson was a blast! We had our inquiry about "Investigating plant parts." I brought in several different plants and tore them apart so they kids could investigate their roots, stem, leaves, and if they had any flowers. The kids got to use the magnifying glasses during this time! They enjoyed this activity and it was great to see them working together and discussing what they were observing!!!
They had art at the end of the day!
It was another great day here in Kindergarten!
Looking forward to a busy Wednesday!

Monday March 18, 2013

We had a GREAT DAY today!!! This was probably the best day I have had with this class! They were ALL on it 100 percent today! They were awesome all day!!!

This morning for morning work we completed a March word search!
We had our morning meeting where we did our calender  weather, counting, math story problem, and discussed the day ahead.
We then discussed how to put words in ABC order. This is a tough concept, but the kids quickly caught on! We spent some time putting a list of eight words in ABC order. The kids did this individually and I worked one on one with students who where struggling. They ALL did a GREAT job!
We had two rotations during our centers time today.
Language arts time we introduced our new sight word of the week which is THERE. We discussed the word and came up with a couple sentences for examples.
We had music and movement following lunch.
We read aloud from our Magic Treehouse chapter book after music and movement.
Writing today. We discussed sequence of events. Students were to think about what they did yesterday and put them in order. They were to draw four pictures of the events and write sentences for the pictures. We ran short on time so not everyone finished but our discussion about the order of events was great. We will continue to talk about sequence of events throughout the year.
We had inside recess because of the rain/ice.
In math we all took a 3 minute math hot pencils test. I will get those graded tonight. The kids have ALL been improving each day on these!
We then took a quarter three assessment on identifying larger, smaller numbers and counting objects. I am sure all did fine on this.
Our main lesson of the day was three dimensional shapes as solids and what the shapes can do, roll, slide, build. We had an awesome discussion and I wrote on the whiteboard to guide our thoughts. The kids came up with great ideas and related the shapes to things they see in real life. It was a great discussion!
I had planned to get some addition skills in there but we ran out of time today!
We ended our day with science. We discussed living and nonliving things and wrapped up our chapter on what plants need. We discussed and related the science topics to everyday life. The kids shared things they have experiences and witnessed. It was a great discussion!!!
I am so proud of the progress that is being made each and everyday with the kids! It is incredible to witness their growth everyday!!
Please continue reading with your children 10-15 minutes each night! Encouraging them to sound out and tap out words they get stuck on. They need to be reading to you. It is very important to say GOOD JOB and encourage them while they are reading. Also discuss the story or book after it is finished to practice some comprehension skills. This puts a purpose to their reading and keeps them interested.
Work on addition and subtraction skills for 5-10 minutes each night.
Write two sentences each night. 1 with a period at the end and 1 with a question mark. Pay close attention to capitalization and punctuation. Encourage kids to tap out, sound out, and spell out their words!!!
Keep practicing sight words as well!!
The extra time each night pays off in the long run!!!!
Looking forward to a GREAT week!!!

Tuesday March 12, 2013

We had a great Tuesday in Kindergarten!
This morning we worked on the missing 100s table for morning work. This is review, but also a great refresher for the kids.
We had our morning meeting and then fundations. In Fundations we discussed short O's and did a worksheet that I have kept for assessment. All the kids did a good job on this and I am happy they are recognizing their short vowels.
We had 2 center rotations today.
In language arts we discussed our new sight word "What" and made a book all about WHAT.
Math time was spent doing a number identification activity and subtraction dice. The kids are doing much better at this game and I saw everyone writing the bigger number first and subtracting the smaller number next. I am very happy with our progress in addition and subtraction!
We had a three minute math test today and we did a shape assessment. I ended up throwing this one out because I was unhappy with how I presented it to the kids. Tomorrow we will do another one that will be kept for assessment on 2d and 3d shapes.
We had recess and snack time.
After snack we had some catch up time for everyone to finish up things from yesterday and today!
The kids then packed up and went to art!
I am excited to see the growth in all the kids. Next week I will be doing some more simple assessments to get an understanding of where the kids are at the end of the 3rd quarter. Its hard to believe that next Thursday starts our final 9 weeks of Kindergarten!
Please continue reading, writing, and working on math skills each night.
Book orders are due tomorrow!!!
Have a good evening!

Monday March 11, 2013

I hope you all had a Great weekend!! I sure did with that Hoosier victory yesterday to give us the Big Ten title! I am not happy with the time change! It was so nice to be driving to school when it was somewhat light out! Now back to darkness! I am happy the weather is starting to feel more like spring!
We had a GREAT Monday here at school! The time change did not have an impact on any of the kids as they were full of energy today!
This morning for morning work we worked on middle sounds. This is good practice for the kids to do from time to time.
Fundations was all about word families ab, ad, and am. The word families will help us with our tapping and sounding out words while reading.
We had 2 center rotations today. Both of my groups did a GREAT job reading today!
Language arts time we discussed the correct way to write I when it is by itself. Students worked out a cut and paste to identify I's that were written correctly and incorrectly. I will be saving this to review their overall understanding of this concept.
After lunch we finished the I worksheet.
The kids had music and movement this afternoon so that was great to have them moving around for 40 minutes!
When the kids came back from music and movement they did a sentence and drew an illustration to go along with the sentence. It is important that the kids understand that the pictures go along with what they story is saying and that they are not just  random pictures along with the writing. They did not have any help from me on this. I encouraged them to use the strategies we have talked about in class to tap out, sound out, and spell their words. The kids all did a great job throughout this activity! I am so happy to see how much they have improved in their writing abilities!
We had inside recess today because of the rain.
We had a snack and restroom break following our recess time.
Math time was busy! We did our 3 minute math, March math books, reviewed 3d and 2d shapes, and a subtraction worksheet!
Science- We started our new unit today on plants and animals! The kids did an activity that asked them categorize living and nonliving things. They worked with their table groups to put living and nonliving pictures into the correct category. They enjoyed doing this! We also completed a chart one their science notebook worksheet. We had a lot of good discussion today during science! It is great to have the kids participating in group discussions and think alouds!
I am looking forward to another great week here in Kindergarten!!!!
Please remember to read, work on math facts, and sentence writing each night for homework!!
Book orders are due by Wednesday! If you are able please allow your children to pick out a few books to order! This gives incentive for them to read!!!!
Monday in class activities!
Mr. Schultz
There is math homework tonight! The back side of their 3 minute math needs to be completed and returned tomorrow!

Wednesday March 6, 2013

Hope you all were able to get a little extra sleep or spend some time with your children this morning!
Today's theme was The Cat in The Hat!
Morning work was a math worksheet where the kids had to follow directions and color numbers a certain color. Once they were finished the picture revealed was a cat in a hat!
While the kids were working on that I got others started on today's art project which was a colored hand to make the face and hair of thing 1 or 2. This afternoon students cut out the body and put them together. They turned out really good!!! Will hang up in the room and put in their scrapbooks!
After lunch we read The Cat in The Hat and discussed.
We had a three minute math test today which will come home tomorrow.
We had a couple fun worksheets related to Dr. Seuss. Cat in the Hat addition, Sneetches counting, and Cat in the had addition necklaces The kids enjoyed working on all of these activities this afternoon. I am very happy with our adding skills!
The kids had outdoor recess so they were able to enjoy all of the fresh snow!
After recess we had our Cat in The Hat cake for snack! My mother made it for our class and it was a fun way to celebrate the Cat in The Hat!
We had computer lab this afternoon. The kids worked on Odyssey Math program. They did a GREAT job in there today and earned 10 minutes of free time on tux paint!
We finished our day putting together our thing people and sharing with friends.
The kids packed up and we read Wacky Wednesday to finish the day!
It was a great day today!!!

Tuesday March 5, 2013

Today was Green Eggs and Ham day!!! It was another great day in Kindergarten!
The morning started off making a Dr. Seuss door hanger! It was funny to hear the kids say how they were going to use it to keep parents and siblings out of their rooms!!
Next we had morning meeting. We a few additional steps to our morning meeting routine. We not have a math story problem that we make a number sentence for and solve. We also discuss even/odd numbers. We also have a weather chart that we will be keeping! These are things that will help encourage critical thinking in your children each morning!
During fundations time we discussed word families an, ap, and at. We will be hitting word families and blends hard in the next several weeks. These will help children tap less and identify bigger words easier!
Centers time we had 2 rotations
Language arts we finished our fundations packets and then I read aloud a book about oceans and we made a main idea web. We talked about what the main idea is and how we can identify it using supporting details found in the text. This concept is difficult for Kindergarten but it is huge in the common core national standards and children must know how to do this at a young age. They will need to identify the main idea and supportive details in the text. We talk about main idea every time we read!
Following lunch our read aloud book was Green Eggs and Ham. We read and discussed parts of the text: beginning, middle and ending.
After reading we had writing time. The kids each created a page that I will put together for a classroom book. The book is titled I will not eat green..... All the food they wrote about started with I will not eat green.... I will not eat it...... The kids had a blast coming up with ideas for this writing! They also got to create an illustration to go along with what they wrote!
Math time was spent doing 3 minute math and dice subtraction  The kids worked with a partner to roll dice. They used the larger number to start their number sentence with and then the smaller number to subtract from the larger number. They all did a great job with this activity and it is a great way for them to have fun while subtracting!
They had outside recess today - Please remember to pack all their snow gear for tomorrow!!
Our snack activity today was creating a green egg from vanilla pudding and a vanilla wafer! They started out with vanilla pudding and I put a drop of green food coloring in it for them to mix around. Then they flattened it out to resemble a fried egg. The wafer was used to represent the yolk! They loved doing this and eating it! Afterwards we took a survey of who enjoyed eating the snack and all but 1 said they liked it!
We then packed up and went to art to finish our day!

It was a great day today! Tomorrow will be Cat in The Hat Day!!!!!
This is the pages for our classroom I do not like green.... book Class book pages!

Tuesday's in class Activities!

Enjoy the snow =)

Monday March 3, 2013

This day flew by! We had a great Monday here in Kindergarten! This week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss week! I have a special activities planned for each day! Today's theme was based on The Foot Book. While we did read several other Dr. Seuss books that is the one our main activity was based from.
This morning we made our Dr. Seuss hats which were a lot of fun! The kids enjoyed making them!
We had our morning meeting and read aloud I Can Read With my Eyes Shut.
We had two center rotations. My two groups read the two books I have selected for the week, worked on sight words, and read Dr. Seuss books when finished!
During Language arts we discussed three word families. They were ock, op, and ot. We will be doing a lot with word families and blends in the next few weeks.
After lunch we read The Foot Book
Music and Movement
Writing time today was spent writing our letters to Kindergarten students at Bittersweet Elementary! The kids had some very good questions for the other Kindergartners to respond to! I was very impressed with their complete sentences and use of punctuation and capital letters! Will be writing to second graders on Wednesday!
We then had recess and our snack time
During our math time for the end of the day we discussed even and odd numbers and what makes them. We discussed how a number that adds itself is an even number (9+9, 5+5,10+10, etc...)
We also had a good discussed about subtraction. We worked together and solving several problems on the whiteboard! The kids did a great job during this time!

To finish the day we made our own "foot books." The kids got to make their own feet. Many did monster feet, blue feet, green feet, polka dot feet, etc.. They had fun coming up with ideas and coloring their feet!
Today was a great Monday and it flew by!
Tomorrows theme is Green Eggs and Ham! I am looking forward to the activities with the kids!

I am not going to send home a calendar for March if you all do not mind. My main homework is the same every night unless I send home an additional worksheet. Please work on math facts for 5 minutes, sentence writing for 5 minutes, sight words, and have your son or daughter read to you for 10 minutes. This 20-30 minute routine will get your child in the habit of doing school work every night and the work done will help them excel here at school. If you want the homework calendar to do those activities as well please let me know and I will get you a copy.

Have a great evening!

Friday March 1, 2013

Another GREAT day here in Kindergarten!
This morning we worked on a practice math page for homework. All problems were addition. The kids also had the option of writing two sentences on the back to receive a sticker!
We had our morning meeting. We will be organizing our calender dates based on two colors. Blue for odd and green for even. This will give us the opportunity to discuss even and odd numbers each day!
After morning meeting we had sing along with the other two Kindergarten classes. The kids really enjoy doing this on Fridays!
Centers went well. We had two rotations to finish out our week!
After centers Mrs. Peaks class and mine listened to a few books on tape. They all did a great job listening and answering questions about the book after!
Following lunch we worked on our short o little books. The kids colored the pages and then read with a friend. We then read and discussed together.
During math we did a domino subtraction activity. The kids used domino's to subtract the smaller number from the bigger number. They had to create number sentences and then solve. It took a little work to get started but by the end nearly all students were working independently to create and solve their own number sentence!
We then had Fairy Tale time. We did an activity with 5 freckled frogs. We read the story and then made our own frogs! The kids had a great time doing this and they all turned out good!!
\
We had read aloud after we finished our frogs and then packed up to go to art!
The kids were great all week!
This weekend: Please read with your children. Encourage them to tap out/sound out words in whatever book they are reading. Read with them several times for 5-10 minutes throughout the day so they do not get exhausted reading all at once. Please work on addition and subtraction facts 0-10 this weekend as well. 10 minutes each day will help tremendously! Please write a few sentences each day as well. 1 with a period and 1 with a question mark. Encourage them to think about capitol letters at the beginning and punctuation at the end. A few minutes each day can make a huge difference in your child's performance at school! Most importantly get them outside to run around and get fresh air this weekend!
Have a GREAT weekend!
Looking forward to Dr. Seuss week!!!
Mr. Schultz

Thursday February 28, 2013

It was another GREAT day in Kindergarten!
Thursdays we have a pretty easy day because of our two specials.
Morning work we made a snowman using the connect the dots worksheet. Students then colored if they had time.
Next we had IMC.
Centers time followed with two rotations.
We had our morning meeting before heading to lunch.
After lunch we had a read aloud and then went to Music and Movement.
We worked on our page from the teeth packet. Today's skill was listening for long vowel sounds. We had a great discussion about the difference between long and short vowels!
After completing this it was time for recess!
After recess we had our snack and then got into our math for the day. We had a busy math day! We first took the 3 minute math test. Several kids are passing each day! Next we finished our February math books! These math books touch on the basic skills we discuss everyday. The kids did a great job answering the number sentences on each page! To finish our math we had two subtraction sheets that were done independently  I wanted to see where each child was at with their subtraction facts. This will help me form small groups to get those who are still struggling caught up!
To finish the day we talked about writing letters to students at Bittersweet. We shared some things we could talk about in our letters. I am looking forward to starting this!
At the end of the day we cleaned our tables and got the room back in order for Friday!!
Looking forward to a great Friday!
Mr. Schultz
